A new beginning

10 Minute Daily Retreat - Read the Daily Gospel with a prayerful heart.
By Susanne Timpani (No.175)

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 3:33-37
Pilate entered the praetorian again and called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"

Jesus answered, "Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?"

Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?"

Jesus answered, "My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world."

Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice."

Most of us love celebrations. We mark new beginnings and celebrate endings. Shopping malls have marked the beginning of the Christmas season with their decorations, music and the presence of Santa.

Yet before we enter into the season of Christmas, have we ended the ordinary year? Churches are full of traditions. Today is the last Sunday of the ordinary year.

Next Sunday we dust off our Advent wreaths, try to find three purple candles and one pink, and be ready to celebrate the four-week journey to Christmas.

On this last Sunday, the final phrase of the Gospel reading states, 'Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.' (v37)

The challenge for us in the upcoming chaos is to listen for the only Voice that is truly important. This will strengthen us to enjoy the season.
