Basketball rules

10 Minute Daily Retreat - Read the Daily Gospel with a prayerful heart.
By Sr Melanie Edwards MGL Sister (No.162)

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 11:28
But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”

Imagine watching someone who did not know the rules, referee a game of basketball. There would be chaos as players questioned the decisions to give fouls, control of the ball and points. They’d wonder what was expected of them. Fairly quickly they would stop enjoying it.
What about a referee who knew the rules? In this scenario, the players would know what to expect – they might not like all the decisions, but at least there would be a structure in which they could enjoy the game.
Jesus proclaims ‘Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it’. Luke 11:28

In a similar way to the basketball game, our listening to and keeping the word of God ultimately helps us to live life to the full.
However, there is a difference. A basketball player probably knows all the rules before they begin, whereas we continue to get to know the word of God more deeply for the rest of our lives.
How might God be inviting you to get to know his word more deeply?

What parts of the word of God do you find comforting, challenging, inspiring, helpful?

5 minutes: READ the text slowly.
REFLECT on a phrase or word that struck you.
SPEAK to God about your thoughts.
5 minutes: LISTEN to God speak to you.
RESPOND with a prayer that feels right for you.
