Seeking Silence

10 Minute Daily Retreat - Read the Daily Gospel with a prayerful heart.
By Susanne Timpani (No.152)

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 6:60-69
Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?"
But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, "Do you take offence at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before?

It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you that do not believe."

For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."

After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him.  Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?"

Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."

I love writing. Except when the words refuse to flow. I enjoy long walks. Except when the weather is extreme. I choose healthy food. Except when chocolate promises me comfort.

I look forward to going to church. Except when the music is outdated or the sermons are dull.

Developing a prayer life is something I value. Except when the Voice in the stillness is too confronting.

Despite the challenges, I strive to keep up these tasks. I keep writing because I have stories to tell. I exercise because I need  to keep fit. I aim to eat healthily because I want to be well.

I go to church because I can't live the Christian life without my community.

I seek God in the silence because He has the words of eternal life. When all the rest disappears, that is what matters most.

It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. John 6:63
