10 Minute Daily Retreat - Read the Daily Gospel with a prayerful heart.
By Malcolm Davies (No.127)
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark 12:35-37
While teaching in the Temple, Jesus said, ‘How can the scribes maintain that the Christ is the son of David? David, himself, moved by the Holy Spirit, said:
The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand and I will put your enemies under your feet.
David himself calls him Lord, in what way then can he be his son?’ And the great majority of the people heard this with delight.
Reflection: The word for Lord in the Greek is kyrios, which was also a title for the Roman Emperor. For the early Christians the proclamation of Jesus as Lord had political overtones and consequences.
Making Jesus our Lord today has consequences in our life.
For us today we have to make a daily decision to live for Jesus as Lord of our life.
Either Jesus is Lord or our own desires and the culture of the world will be Lord.
Jesus tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God and that means taking up our own cross and putting Jesus first in our life.
Practically that means putting prayer first in our life and not watching TV.
Practically it means putting the poor and marginalised as first in our life and not another expensive holiday.
Practically it means taking time to read the scriptures and not wasting time on Facebook.
Take time today to reflect on whether Jesus is Lord or just another influence in your life.
5 minutes: READ the text slowly.
REFLECT on a phrase or word that struck you.
SPEAK to God about your thoughts.
5 minutes: LISTEN to God speak to you.
RESPOND with a prayer that feels right for you.
