The End

10 Minute Daily Retreat - Read the Daily Gospel with a prayerful heart.
By Susanne Timpani (No.125)

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 28:16-20
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him; but some doubted.

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you;

and behold, I am with you always, to the end of time."

Have you ever watched a movie or read a book and reached the end feeling less than satisfied?

I watched a TV program recently which had me spellbound until the last scene. The main character then mumbled her final comment and no matter how many times I rewound it, I could not understand what she said. How utterly frustrating and disappointing.

Today’s reading is the final paragraph in Matthew’s gospel. Unlike my recent show, Jesus’ last words are crystal clear. ‘I am with you always, to the end of time.’

Those words have proven accurate. The Christian church has experienced persecution and hardship since it began. Yet here we are today; Jesus is in our midst just as He was with the disciples.

Jesus’ promise extends to us as individuals. Regardless of what life brings our way, He is with us always, until the end.

5 minutes: READ the text slowly.
REFLECT on a phrase or word that struck you.
SPEAK to God about your thoughts.
5 minutes: LISTEN to God speak to you.
RESPOND with a prayer that feels right for you.
