Stronger than Death

10 Minute Daily Retreat - Read the Daily Gospel with a prayerful heart.
By Malcolm Davies (No.101)

They then took charge of Jesus, and carrying his own cross he went out of the city to the place of the skull, or, as it was called in Hebrew, Golgotha where they crucified him with two others, one on either side with Jesus in the middle.(John 19:17-18)

The crucifixion is the revelation of the mercy and love of God for all humanity.  Jesus went about healing and liberating the poor and marginalised and merited the greatest mercy.

Jesus is instead arrested, abused, condemned, scourged, crowned with thorns and then nailed to the Cross and dies in agony.

Each hammer of the nails into Jesus' hands and feet is also a nail in the coffin of evil and sin in our world.
For three hours Jesus hung on the Cross. The sinless one become sin and felt totally abandoned. Even if I were the only person in the whole world, he would have died for me.

In the passion and death of Jesus we see the mercy of God for us in the most powerful way possible when the Father allows his Son to die.

The Cross of Christ is a revelation of the eternal and limitless love of God that is stronger than death, evil and sin.
