The Magnificat

10 Minute Daily Retreat (No. 14)
Malcolm Davies shares one of his favourite scriptures with us today.
'The Magnificat: And Mary said,
                                                    "My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.
                                                    For behold, henceforth all gererations will call me blessed;
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
                                                    and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on those who fear him
                                                   from generation to generation."(Luke 1:46-50)

There  is always an invitation to us to reflect on the mercy of God just as Mary reflected and was able to proclaim that this mercy is available to every generation. That includes our generation. Are we aware of the mercy that God offers us?  Or are we a people that is comfortable with who we are, and resist the call to ongoing conversion and repentance?

Mary is the first disciple among the faithful and leads us in following a God who invites us to seek first the Kingdom. We enter in to that Kingdom by an attitude of repentance, conversion and openness to the mercy of God.
There is a deep relational poverty in our society. Mary gives us an example on how to help those who are alone by visiting her kinswoman Elizabeth. There are many people I encounter who follow the example of Mary by visiting the poor, those in nursing homes or who are housebound.

Take a moment to reflect on those in your life who would be helped by a visit from you. Perhaps,
a neighbor who has no friends or family nearby,
a resident in a nursing home,
coffee with a work colleague who seems to be struggling in life,
a woman with young children who would appreciate some assistance.

5 minutes: READ the text slowly.
REFLECT on a phrase or word that struck you.
SPEAK to God about your thoughts.
5 minutes: LISTEN to God speak to you.
RESPOND with a prayer that feels right for you.
