Life is a Pilgrimage

10 Minute Daily Retreat (no. 11)
Jane Borg continues this week’s theme of Life’s Journey.
'The dictionary describes pilgrimage as a sacred journey with and towards Christ; a long journey or search. If Life is a Pilgrimage, this begs the question: what are we searching for? The answer is not a ‘what’ but a ‘who’!

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. (Isaiah 55:6)

Remember how God allowed the Israelites to journey for 40 years in the desert, so He could transform them into a nation, and turn their hearts from the idols of Egypt towards the one true God?

‘Search’ involves no sense of standing still - we journey and as we journey we are transformed – into good or not, depending on our response to God and to what the world offers us.

In his autobiography, ConfessionsSt Augustine said: “You were within and I was without, and I sought you there…. You were with me, but I was not with You.” If we search and journey, looking for the illusive happiness and peace, but do so without an encounter with Jesus Christ, we will search in vain.

Like St Augustine, this is what I did. Like St Augustine, an encounter with Christ brought meaning and purpose to my life. My journey is now one of discipleship with Christ.

Sometimes it might feel like our journey is in total darkness; sometimes we may sense the light. Regardless of where each of us is in this journey, we are not alone. We are journeying as a people of Christ, towards Christ, with Christ.

In your quiet prayer, allow today’s verse and theme speak to your heart.'

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. (Isaiah 55:6)
